Why this matters now
NEET means not in education, employment or training. Almost one in eight young people are now NEET, and the Milburn Review warns that could reach one in six within five years, or 1.25 million young people (Schools Week, 27 May 2026). In July the government began giving councils a Risk of NEET Indicator to spot vulnerable teenagers earlier (GOV.UK, 2 July 2026). Schools, councils and employers all need a clearer picture, sooner.
