Marketing your sixth form: what actually moves applications

Written by Nicola Entwistle | Sep 16, 2026, 3:01:02 AM

Every sixth form runs an open evening, updates its prospectus, and posts on Instagram in the autumn term. Most of it barely moves the needle. The schools that filled their September intake early this year weren't doing more marketing - they were doing a handful of things differently. Here's what actually worked.

Open evenings aren't the whole strategy

An open evening converts people who were already looking. It does nothing for the student who hasn't thought about post-16 options yet, or who's assumed (wrongly) that your sixth form isn't for them. Schools that filled early treated open evenings as the closing step in a longer funnel, not the whole funnel - reaching students earlier, in Year 10 and early Year 11, through subject taster sessions and assemblies at partner schools, well before the crunch of October and November.

Show outcomes, not the prospectus

Glossy prospectuses describe facilities. Applicants want proof they'll get somewhere. The schools that filled early leaned hard on destinations data and specific student stories - "three students from last year's cohort went on to Russell Group medicine," not "excellent pastoral care." Real alumni, real grades, real next steps beat polished copy every time, and it's cheap to produce: a short video, a results-day photo, a LinkedIn post from a former student.

Time the push to real decision points

Applications don't happen on a school's marketing calendar - they happen around options evenings, mock exam results, and (crucially) results day itself. The early-filling schools built a "results day pivot": a fast, prepared campaign - email, text, a landing page - ready to fire the moment GCSE results land, capturing the wave of students recalculating their options in real time, instead of waiting for a scheduled open evening weeks later.

Make it easy to say yes

A great open evening followed by a clunky paper application form loses students to the school down the road with a five-minute online form. Every point of friction between "I'm interested" and "I've applied" costs conversions. The schools that filled early cut this down to one simple online application step, with automatic confirmation and a clear next step - no chasing, no lost forms, no delay between interest and enrolment.

Where to start

None of this needs a bigger budget. It needs earlier outreach, real proof over polish, a plan for results day, and a frictionless application step. If your sixth form marketing this year is still "open evening + prospectus," pick one of these and test it before next September.
