Thursday 20 August was A-level results day, and across the Applicaa network it produced the single busiest enrolment surge we've ever recorded. Here's what stood out when we looked at the data.
The busiest single day we've ever seen
70,405 students were enrolled across the network on 20 August, more than any other day in Applicaa's history. The surge carried on well past the day itself: 14,774 more students were enrolled the following day, and the network was still processing over 4,000 enrolments a day through the following week as late results, appeals, and clearing decisions came in.
It's also a big step up on last year. On the equivalent results day in 2025 (21 August), 57,380 students were enrolled. This year's total was up almost a quarter on that, roughly 13,000 more students enrolled on the day itself.
Over half the day's enrolments happened before lunch
The rush started the moment results were in students' hands. By 8am UK time there were already 3,156 enrolments logged. That climbed fast: by 10am, the network was processing 12,576 enrolments in a single hour, the busiest hour of the day, working out to roughly one enrolment every 0.3 seconds.
By the time most schools broke for lunch, over half the day's total enrolments (around 55%) were already done, students confirming places, staff checking documents, all within hours of results being published.
The work you don't see: nearly 88,000 checks behind the scenes
It's a reminder that the visible number (70,405 enrolled) is only part of the story. The bulk of Enrolment Day workload for admissions teams is the verification behind each one, not just the confirmation click.
Not everyone got in on the day, and that's normal
The system sorted outcomes in real time, not just successes. On 20 August, 13,121 students were placed on a waiting list and 6,137 had offers declined, both processed the same day the results landed.
The network effect: one decision, felt everywhere else
Enrolment Day isn't 547 schools running in isolation, it's one network processing thousands of families who were weighing up more than one option. This cycle, 85,676 students had applications live at more than one Applicaa school at the same time. A student can only take up one place, so every one of those decisions had a knock-on effect somewhere else.
That's the quiet advantage of a shared network: waiting lists don't just wait on a manual withdrawal, they move as fast as families make up their minds.
Keeping everyone in the loop
All that movement needed communication to match. On Enrolment Day alone, the network sent:

Students and parents weren't left refreshing a portal wondering what happened next, updates went out the same day, as decisions were made.

The tail didn't stop at midnight
By 6 September, the network had processed 109,137 enrolments since results day, more than one and a half times the single day's total, as the last of the late results, appeals and clearing decisions worked their way through the system.
